A Michigan man, who was shot by Shelby Township police officers after stabbing his mother, reportedly sought to provoke police into killing him. Miles Farish, 30, is now facing multiple charges including assault with intent to murder following the violent sequence of events that unfolded on Jan. 9, as per CBS News Detroit.
Farish, after allegedly stabbing his mother multiple times at Shelby Oaks Apartments, called 911 and told the dispatcher he wanted to be killed by police or he would kill them, Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham stated. Upon arrival, Farish charged the officers with a knife raised, spurring them to utilize a Taser twice which was ineffective. Subsequently, two officers fired 18 shots, hitting Farish six times, detailed in body camera footage, reviewed by FOX 2 Detroit.
Despite the harrowing ordeal, authorities say the officers showed considerable restraint before using deadly force. "In his comments, and even in his actions, he wanted law enforcement to take action against him and shoot him," Wickersham explained. The fast-paced encounter inside Shelby Oaks Apartments escalated quickly but ended with the officers administering medical aid to save Farish's life, as reported by The Detroit News. Farish survived, and the officer's conduct has been deemed justified by local authorities.
Farish is currently under guard and in a stable condition at Beaumont Hospital in Troy, where he was charged. His bond has been set at a cash-only $2 million. The two officers involved, having been cleared of any wrongdoing shall return to duty on Friday. Interestingly, before this incident, Farish's interactions with law enforcement were minimal, with only a missing persons report and a traffic violation on record.
The stabbing victim, Farish's mother, thankfully survived the attack. As for the legal proceedings, Farish's attorney, Josh Jones, conveyed no comment on the matter to the press. The situation has reignited discussions around protocols in violent confrontations and the mental health of those encountering law enforcement, though authorities have so far found no history of mental health issues in Farish's background.
