The Fish Creek is banking on you to give it a good scrub. That's right—the 6th annual Fish Creek Cleanup Challenge needs volunteers to spark up its grounds, and the date's been pushed from Jan. 27 to a later Saturday, Feb. 24, due to a soggy situation with too much rain and high creek levels.
The eco-friendly showdown aims to spruce up a hefty 8-mile stretch and is ringing in Angel Carter, the event organizer, who's crossing her fingers for a hefty turnout. In an effort shepherding 65,800 pounds of trash out of the Creek and its surroundings over the past five years, a stroll by the waterline still reveals more dreck than we'd like, with all sorts of flotsam jammed in tree bows and roots. "We are coming together to clean the creek," Carter urged, according to the City of Arlington, Texas.
Starters should flock to Cravens Park or the playground across from 4355 Allegro Lane at 8 a.m. sharp for a quick safety brief before digging in. The spruce-up crew welcomes all ages, with Carter underscoring that there's no pint-sized clause to show some love for Mother Nature. But remaining warm, safe, and prepared for a bit of mud is a must, so the organizers are asking—for those who brave the sludge—to suit up in layers and waterproof wear.
A call to arms for all litter lifters to don their hardiest waterproof boots and rain gear, so they can jump into the creek—no, not for a swim, but to haul out the plastic bags and Styrofoam cups messing with Fish Creek's vibe. This eco-party gives out gloves and bags, so just bring your enthusiasm and any favorite grabber tool to clutch that trash.
And it's not a solo affair—big hitters like The Mission Continues and USAA are pitching in to clear the debris, ensuring Fish Creek's facelift is a community-wide endeavor. In the spirit of camaraderie, all gathered garbage needs to hitch a hike to the paved trail, making it easy for parks staff to whisk it away and add it to the pile that'll be weighed post-cleanup.
