Port Huron is bracing for the chill as it rolls out the welcome mat for the 2024 Chilly Fest — a two-day frosty fiesta slated for February 2 and 3, packed with a smorgasbord of winter wonders like the physics-defying bed races, heartwarming chili confrontations, and foot-stomping live music. A cavalcade of events, from the snuggly PoHo Hot Cocoa Run to ice sculptures that turn downtown into an al fresco art gallery, promises to thaw even the coldest of spirits. According to the WXYZ report, festivities are hosted by a coalition of local organizations including the Downtown Development Authority, and McMorran Place.
Local businesses are turning up the heat, too, with Dot's Candy Bar diving into the Chili Crawl Competition for the first time — their entry, 'Grandpa's Chili', a heart- and belly-warming family recipe. As per the Port Huron Times Herald, owner Beth Wesler's staff has scoured past Chilly Fest results for the ultimate game plan. They'll be up against the culinary might of places like Bootlegger’s Axe Co., where General Manager Jeff Bennett relishes the "healthy, friendly rivalry" between competing eateries. According to Bennett in a statement obtained by Port Huron Times Herald, excitement bubbles over being part of the Chilly Fest.
The chili lineup at the Chilly Fest is as contentious as the icy bed races, with 16 establishments vying for the title. The Times Herald notes that participants, like Bootlegger's Axe Co. and Wings Ect., will lay it all on the line from noon to 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, satisfying spice-hunters for a mere $10 ticket — which can be scooped up online or at McMorran Plaza that day.
Meanwhile, a synchronization of sports, sweets, and songs awaits at Wrigley Hall where live concerts will set the tone for a chillingly good time. From the kick-off of the PoHo Hot Cocoa Run to the strummings of BandWagon and The Gasoline Gypsies, the soundscape is as vibrant as winter's icy palette. "Chilly Fest will bring all the community favorites," Downtown Development Authority Director Natacha Hayden told Voice News, emphasizing the fresh partnership with Wrigley Hall that will host nighttime live entertainment for the fest.
Port Huron is set to become a bustling hub for community engagement and frosty fun. As detailed by Voice News, highlights like the free carriage rides courtesy of local sponsors, and the adorable Fuzzy Penguin Hunt, only add to the charm and warmth of this beloved winter even.
