The furriest players on four legs are gearing to take the field for Puppy Bowl XX, and doggone it, the stakes are as cute as they come. Slated to kick off on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 11, this year's spectacle promises not just to tug at heartstrings but also to make tails wag across the nation. Shelters and rescues from no less than 36 states are shipping out their cuddliest contenders for what's being billed as the "Most Adorable Puppy Bowl Ever", according to Yahoo Life.
This 20th installment of the four-legged furball frenzy will feature an all-time high of 131 adorable athletes from 73 shelters, ready to rumble and melt hearts. Fans can catch the marvel of puppy agility and cuteness overload on various channels including Animal Planet, Discovery, and TBS. This year, celebs like Miranda Lambert are also set to make a splash, spotlighting pups seeking forever homes, as confirmed by the Detroit Free Press.
Meanwhile, the Philly area is throwing its weight behind nine rescue pups who’ve made the squad. These local fur stars hail from spots like Phoenix Animal Rescue and Providence Animal Center, and they're giving Eagles supporters something to cheer about after a disappointing NFL season. The regional contenders stand a dog's chance to steal the show, with the tail-wagging action broadcasted live for fans everywhere, according to WHYY.
It's not just about the young blood, though. Puppy Bowl XX will honor its legacy with the induction of four veterans into the Puppy Bowl Hall of Fame, showing that even in the dog-eat-dog world of puppy sports, there's room for nostalgia. "It’s astounding to consider two decades. In dog years, that’s equivalent to two lifetimes," former NFL referee and present Puppy Bowl overseer Dan Schachner said, who's also bringing his pooch, Whistle, to assist in officiating, as per Yahoo Life.
Getting in on the huddle this year are six puppies with special needs who are set to show that every dog has its day, like Sweetpea, a tiny 1.7-pound bundle of fur, and a two-legged Papillon named Mr. Bean. Love is in the air and possibly to be found, as many of these four-legged stars have already tackled their way into the hearts and homes of viewers, some even with the show's crew.
With Warner Bros. Discovery and Best Friends Animal Society teaming up to cover adoption fees for some lucky pooches, and with on-the-field action featuring the Lombarky trophy up for grabs, this year's Puppy Bowl seems to have all the right moves. Pooch punters can tune into the three-hour event premiering at 2 p.m. but those eager to dive right into the fluff can catch the pre-game show at 1 p.m.
