Yesterday afternoon, a tense standoff concluded without loss of life when Rohnert Park Public Safety officers successfully disarmed a man threatening to harm himself with a knife. The 58-year-old individual, whose identity has not been disclosed due to the situation's mental health context, brandished the weapon during an encounter with the police at Adrian Drive and Southwest Blvd.
Officials say the officer tried to get the man to drop the knife and accept help, but he began to freely roam the streets, eventually stopping on College View Drive, where the situation grew more volatile. Rohnert Park Public Safety quickly sealed the vicinity, asserting control over the precarious scene. In a statement obtained by the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety, authorities detailed how the man began to agitate the situation, harming himself with the knife increasingly.
Backup swiftly came in the form of additional police officers, Sonoma County Fire Medical personnel, and Rohnert Park Public Safety Fire, who were on standby. Negotiators from the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Hostage Negotiation Team were also called in to aid in de-escalating the incident.
Following close to an hour of negotiation, the man started to lunge at officers before he accidentally dropped the weapon. Lt. Tim Lyons stated, "The officers used the opportunity to safely intervene, deploying less lethal munition to effectively subdue the man." According to the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety, a combination of a 40 mm soft sponge round, less lethal bean bag rounds, and a taser were utilized to take him into custody.
The subject was then transported to a local hospital for evaluation. The Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety is processing charges to forward to the Sonoma County District Attorney's office after the incident.
