The Super Bowl is always a magnet for top-notch security, and this year, it's no different. San Antonio Police Officer Gabe Mercado and his trusty K9 partner, Rocky, have been selected to join the security team at the big game, as reported by KSAT. The dynamic duo from San Antonio Airport Police Department, trained for large-scale events, will for the first time secure the fan-crammed stands and bustling corridors of the stadium.
Rocky, a six-year-old German Shepard excelled in explosive detection, is set to put his skills to the test alongside K9 squads from across the globe. "We will be providing security. There’s going to be K9′s from all around the world. They will be inside the stadium and outside the stadium, ensuring everyone is safe before everyone is enjoying the festivities," Officer Mercado conveyed in a statement obtained by KSAT. The pair are scheduled to depart for Las Vegas on February 1, 2024, with the SAPD's rich history of sending officers to the Super Bowl as their backing.
It's not just the fellows from Texas showing up to secure the field; a group of seasoned law enforcement officers from Schuylkill County, who usually work at Philadelphia Eagles home games, are also punching their ticket to the grand football showdown. According to a Yahoo News report, Charlie Dries and his team, who are part-time employees of Apex Security, will pull the security strings at Super Bowl LVII.
The Schuylkill County group, including Dries, Jon J. Bowman, Scott Kramer, Joe "Bub" Connors and Scott Taylor, has a reputed 16-year streak of working at Eagles' games. This time, they're stepping up their game to a national stage with Apex Security handling the contract for the Super Bowl. "Never did we ever think the Eagles would be in the Super Bowl and we'd be working it," Dries admitted in a statement obtained by Yahoo News. Despite not being stationed at the heart of the arena, this group of officers is poised to tackle assignments ranging from NFL Players Association events to undisclosed duties on game day.
As the city of fervent fans across the country gear up to watch the Philadelphia Eagles clash with the Kansas City Chiefs, security teams like those of Mercado and Rocky, and the Schuylkill County squad are gearing up too, ensuring a safe environment for this eagerly anticipated football fiesta. In perhaps the alignment of the stars or just pure serendipity, these officers and their companions will breathe life into their once far-fetched Super Bowl dreams, all in a day's work.
