San Antonio drivers are bracing for a major traffic headache this weekend as a key interchange shuts down for significant construction work. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced a "Major Closure" at the Loop 1604-Interstate 10 interchange on the city’s Northwest side, set to disrupt traffic from January 11 at 9 p.m. until January 15 at 5 a.m., as reported by Express News. The closure is part of the massive, $1.4 billion Loop 1604 North Expansion Project, which aims to convert the thoroughfare into a 10-lane highway and add a series of flyover lanes connecting it to I-10.
The extent of the shutdown will affect all eastbound and westbound lanes of Loop 1604 from La Cantera Parkway to Vance Jackson Road, and all eastbound and westbound lanes on I-10 from La Cantera Parkway to UTSA Boulevard. TxDOT officials have suggested that drivers should, to the best of their ability, avoid the area if possible due to the expected congestion, according to information provided by MSN. This disruption will force travelers to detour along frontage roads and take lengthy turnarounds to continue their journeys on either highway.
To navigate the closures, drivers on eastbound I-10 will need to exit at the I-10 eastbound frontage road post La Cantera Parkway, while westbound travelers will take an exit after UTSA Boulevard, winding their way through the intricate dance of frontage roads to reenter the highway past the interchange, as detailed by Express News. Loop 1604 travelers will encounter similar detours, with eastbound motorists exiting at Vance Jackson and navigating back through UTSA Boulevard, and westbound drivers peeling off near Vance Jackson to trace a path via La Cantera Parkway.
Despite the traffic snarls expected to unfold, TxDOT maintains that the pain is a prerequisite to long-term gains, promising to slash current congestion by almost 80 percent upon completion. "It's one of the most congested corridors in the state," TxDOT Public Information Officer Jennifer Serold told MSN. "Over the next 20 to 25 years, the amount of daily drivers is expected to double. So, this expansion project is to prepare for future growth but also to give benefits to drivers in the next few years … It’s bringing a lot of congestion relief to drivers by giving them more lanes to travel on. And then, of course, when you reduce congestion, you increase safety for the drivers."
