The San Antonio Spurs, once again skating by without their towering top pick Victor Wembanyama, found themselves on the short end of the stick, falling to the Charlotte Hornets, 124-120, and then to the Chicago Bulls, 122-116, in back-to-back nights of hard-fought basketball. On the Hornets front, It was LaMelo Ball who rained on the Spurs' parade with a 28-point performance, including a critical stretch of 16 points in the fourth quarter, as reported by KENS 5.
With Wembanyama benched, the Spurs sought victory without their 7-foot phenom against the Bulls. Despite their best efforts, including a career night from Tre Jones who dazzled with 30 points, the Bulls swooped in for the win. The absence of Wembanyama, who has been out due to a minutes restriction as part of his recovery, ostensibly left the Spurs struggling to patch the gaping hole in their defense.
Keldon Johnson also pitched in strongly off the bench, knocking down 26 points in the loss to the Bulls, further showing the Spurs' bench depth. The Bulls were buoyed by Nikola Vucevic's dominant double-double, which was too much for the Spurs, as Sports Illustrated detailed in their game recap.
Now sitting at 7-34, the upcoming road trip could serve as a breeding ground for team chemistry and provides an opportunity for the young Spurs team to rally. With a five-game shuffle down the Eastern Conference, starting off against the Atlanta Hawks.
