A hateful display against a Black family has rocked San Pedro as local authorities and officials respond to a vile act of racism. Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn has expressed deep concern after a swastika and a racial slur were spray-painted on a family's car. "Few of us can imagine the fear and anger that Mr. Scott and his family are feeling after this most recent attack. Both as a Supervisor and as a resident of this community, I am outraged and saddened that one of our neighbors could be targeted in such a vile way. My thoughts are with the Scott family," Hahn stated, in a message posted on her official government page.
Reginald Scott, the owner of the vandalized 2007 Ford Shelby which he called his dream car, is now contemplating moving his family away from the neighborhood they have called home for 26 years following this and other incidents. "We’ve been here for 26 years but it’s about time to leave," Scott told NBC Los Angeles. His car was defiled with offensive messages just days after Christmas, an act that has sent shockwaves through the community.
The family has experienced multiple incidents of vandalism in the past, including arson inside their truck and a broken rearview mirror, evidencing a pattern of targeted hate. Neighbors, disturbed by the overt displays of animosity, hope the perpetrator is quickly brought to justice. In response to the incident, Supervisor Hahn has assured that everyone in LA County belongs and everyone deserves to live in peace and noted that LAPD Harbor Division is actively investigating the crime.
A GoFundMe page, featuring details about the hate crime, was initiated by Reginald Scott.
