A violent confrontation in Shelby Township has led to multiple charges against Miles Farish, age 30, for the alleged stabbing of his mother and assaulting of police officers, according to officials. Farish is accused of stabbing his mother repeatedly while she was asleep on January 9 and subsequently attacking three Shelby Township police officers who arrived in response to the incident, as reported by ClickOnDetroit.
Originally arrested and arraigned on a charge of assault with intent to murder, which carries a potential life sentence, Farish's troubles multiplied with the addition of further charges of three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and three counts of assaulting, resisting, or obstructing a police officer after an independent investigation conducted by the Macomb County Sheriff's Department, he was also shot by a responding officer after allegedly refusing to drop his weapon and charging at them, which CBS Detroit reports was captured on police radio traffic as a potential attempt at "suicide by cop".
Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido, quoted by CBS Detroit, emphasized the gravity of the offenses, stating, "We will vigorously pursue justice for those who brazenly assault our law enforcement officers,” and affirming these acts pose a danger to both law enforcement and societal norms. Following the arraignment, Farish was given a $2 million cash bond, with court proceedings including a probable-cause conference set for January 25 and a preliminary examination on February 1, a schedule detailed by Macomb Daily.
In addition to the charges, the accused was referred for a mental health evaluation by Community Corrections, and while the case is ongoing, it brings to light Farish's previous legal woes, which include lawsuits for nonpayment of rent by Shelby Oaks in 2021 and 2022, showing a pattern of troubled behavior leading up to the present accusations the Macomb Daily reported on Farish's history with Shelby Oaks Apartments, suggesting financial instability may have played a role in his erratic behavior.
