In the early hours of January 24, the quiet streets of downtown Petaluma became the canvas for a vandalism spree that left several businesses with broken windows and the community rattled. The suspected vandal: a 36-year-old with a history of similar offenses. According to a police report, Jeffrey Berg, a resident of Petaluma, was apprehended by officers from the Community Impact Response Team near the Trestle Bridge after being linked to at least two incidents of felony vandalism.
The day's disruptions began at 5:00 a.m. with a call to the police about a shattered window at Martial Arts USA, and soon after, a similar fate befell Blazing Ace Smoke Shop, where security footage helped police put a name to the face behind the destruction and Jeffrey Berg who the officers had encountered in the past, his identity swiftly pinned to the crimes. Over the morning, a total of ten reports trickled into the station, painting a picture of rampant vandalism that included damage to both businesses and vehicles, with broken glass becoming a common motif across such downtown landmarks as 356 and 114 Petaluma Boulevard North, B Street, and multiple sites on North Water Street.
By 11:13 a.m., law enforcement officers who already had an eye out for Berg found their man, detaining him on felony vandalism charges. They linked him to the initial reports through surveillance footage, a rock left as silent testimony at the scene of the crime, and they knew Berg from his criminal résumé. The Petaluma Police Department, still investigating the other eight incidents, continues to gather evidence such as surveillance footage, fingerprints, and biological traces to connect the dots back to the suspect they already have in custody.
The department has expressed gratitude towards the community for rallying to report the crimes quickly, emphasizing the critical role of such partnerships in sustaining public safety and quality of life, "The Petaluma Police Department is committed to working to reduce crime and improve the quality of life throughout the City of Petaluma and encourages community members to partner with us by contacting the Police Department when a police response is appropriate," states the release from the department.
