Breaking barriers in the male-dominated fire service industry, Tami Kayea has been sworn in as Sunnyvale's first female fire chief, and with her appointment, she becomes the first woman to ever hold this position full-time in North Texas, setting a fiery precedent in an occupation that has long been governed by tradition and, more often than not, by men, in a ceremony that was as much about looking forward as it was about reflecting on the years of service that brought her to this moment, according to Fox 4 News.
Kayea, who spent the last 27 years climbing the ranks at Dallas Fire-Rescue where she was the valedictorian of her academy class and rose to deputy chief, ultimately stepping into a new role following former chief Doug Kendrick's retirement announcement in August, carries a lineage of firefighting with her into the position as a fourth-generation fire service member; her family's history is inextricably interwoven with the profession, she was in charge of DFR's operations on a tragic night back in 2016 when five officers were killed which she recalls has left an indelible mark on her.
"I had always thought about one day being a chief. Though I never really thought about leaving DFR. Even when this came out, I wasn’t actively looking," Kayea said, exemplifying a commitment to her career that was perhaps predestined but never taken for granted, by the seasoned firefighter and licensed paramedic who also balances life as a family person with a husband, two sons, and a granddaughter while indulging in woodworking and football in her downtime, as per Fox 4 News.
Jeff Jones, Sunnyvale's town manager, indicated that the nationwide search for a new chief which lasted three months was centered on merit, the quest wasn't to make history but rather to secure the best candidate for the fast-evolving needs of the Sunnyvale community, and in Kayea, with her impressive credentials and intimate knowledge of community service, they found just that. "We really weren’t trying to make history when we hired Tami, we wanted to hire the very best and the brightest and we did that," he highlighted in a comment provided by CBS News.
Now at the helm of Sunnyvale's Fire Department, Kayea is one of only five female fire chiefs in Texas, a testament to her resilience and expertise, she bears not just the mantle of leadership but also the aspirations of countless other women eyeing the gold-braided uniform, proving that the gendered barriers of yesteryear are yielding to the progress of today, and tomorrow's fire services might just blaze a more inclusive trail.
