A 22-year-old Florida man has been slapped with a slew of charges in the chilling October kidnapping of a Michigan man from a suburban Detroit gym's parking lot, authorities said.
Angel Pantoja, hailing from Tampa, Florida, is accused of snatching a 24-year-old man from Lifetime Fitness in Shelby Township, Michigan, along with other masked, armed assailants. The kidnapping, which unfolded at approximately 7:15 p.m. on Oct. 23, ended with the victim discovered bound in the back of a crashed pickup truck, per ClickOnDetroit.
One perpetrator was caught immediately following a frantic vehicle pursuit on the same day. The latest break, leading to Pantoja's arrest, resulted from extensive detective work done by the Shelby Township Police Detective Bureau, involving numerous search warrants and interviews, according to details from WXYZ.
An arraignment held on Tuesday, Jan. 9 saw Pantoja face serious charges, including carjacking, armed robbery, torture, and unlawful imprisonment. His bond was set at an eye-watering $3 million cash only, with no 10% option, signaling the severity of his alleged crimes. Shelby Township detectives have their sights set on additional suspects, with warrants out and some suspects already detained elsewhere, awaiting extradition to Michigan, CBS Detroit reported.
