A second suspect from Florida has been charged in the kidnapping of a man from a Shelby Township gym parking lot, Michigan authorities declared. Angel Pantoja, 22, of Tampa, stands accused in the harrowing October 23 abduction that began outside a Lifetime Fitness and culminated in a vehicular pursuit and crash.
Pantoja, now facing a litany of charges including carjacking, armed robbery, and torture, was ordered held on an imposing $3 million bond – a figure intended to, but not certain to prevent any attempt to rejoin society before trial. As described by The Detroit News, his slated re-appearance in court is set for Wednesday, with the serious nature of the offenses possibly netting him a lifetime behind bars if convicted.
The case, which has branches extending from Michigan to Florida, also involved a tactical operation bringing together Shelby Township detectives and various agencies including the Tampa Bay Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. "It was not a random act," Shelby Township Police Sgt. Mark Benedettini told Macomb Daily, adding complexity to a case that already spans multiple jurisdictions.
According to ClickOnDetroit, the authorities allege that Pantoja and his accomplices not only forcibly restrained the victim but also ventured into the victim's house, elevating the incident from a mere roadside crime to a home invasion. The subsequent police chase only served to further demonstrate the alleged determination to escape at all costs, eventually leading to a collision that proved to be the undoing of at least one suspect on the run.
The investigation continues as Shelby Township detectives work to close the net around the other suspects involved. Warrants have been issued, and other individuals tied to the case await extradition back to Michigan to face justice, as reported by WXYZ. Meanwhile, defense attorney Mariell Lehman, representing Pantoja, has yet to comment publicly on the charges.
