Detected at a lower rate than the previous year, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents found 96 handguns at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) security checkpoints in 2023, as reported by The Detroit Free Press. These numbers represent a small but notable decrease from the 100 handguns intercepted in 2022 and highlights the continuing challenge of illicit arms at America's airport security fronts.
Compared to the national average, DTW's figures are aligned, with one handgun for every 134,732 passengers versus the national rate of one firearm for roughly every 127,447 travelers screened, as detailed by TSA's press release. But it's not just a local trend; TSA officers nationwide confiscated a record 6,737 firearms in 2023, approximately 93% of which were loaded, marking an increase from the recorded 6,542 firearms in 2022.
The Michigan TSA Federal Security Director, Reggie Stephens warned, "Bringing a firearm to the checkpoint presents an unnecessary risk to both passengers and airport employees," in a statement obtained by CBS Detroit. Stephens continued to implore travelers to "start with an empty bag so you know with certainty that there is nothing prohibited inside."
Travelers who bring a firearm to a TSA checkpoint, if not following the proper guidelines, may face severe financial repercussions with civil penalties soaring up to $15,000, according to FOX 2 Detroit. Those found in violation may also see their TSA PreCheck privileges revoked for at least five years and, depending on local laws, be subjected to arrest or citations by law enforcement officers who remove the passenger along with the firearm right from the checkpoint area.
TSA does allow passengers to travel with firearms in checked luggage, provided they are unloaded, packed separately from ammunition in a locked hardback case, and declared at the airline check-in counter. However, firearm possession laws vary across state and local jurisdictions, making it incumbent upon travelers to verify regulations at their destinations.
