The University of Houston got a jolt Monday morning when a natural gas leak was reported near TDECU Stadium's parking garage, leading authorities to block off part of Holman Street. According to ABC13, the situation unfolded shortly before 9 a.m., causing a stir among students and staff.
In an alert that appeared more nuisance than disaster, the university announced the closing of Holman Street from Scott Street to Cullen Boulevard "until further notice." As the gas leak sniffed out normalcy, all movements to and from the stadium garage and lot 15c were promptly snuffed. UH didn't mention what caused the gas leak, nor did it instruct anyone to hunker down with a shelter-in-place.
Students and employees found their routine disrupted as the university urged them to avoid the area altogether. As if rerouting wasn't enough, those with parking passes to the now-inaccessible stadium garage were instead pointed to zones E and F for temporary respite. This minor upheaval served as a reminder of the infrastructural vulnerabilities that thread through campus life.
Meanwhile, a separate announcement from KHOU stressed the urgency by stating that the stadium garage "is not accessible at this time." Adding to the strain, the location of the gas leak, is uncomfortably close to the thrum of student activity around TDECU Stadium.
Holman Street will remain off-limits until the all-clear.
