Gunfire rang out Tuesday afternoon in Houston's northeast side as undercover cops found themselves dodging bullets during a narcotics surveillance operation, according to reports. Fox26 Houston stated, the officers were inside their unmarked vehicle when an unrelated suspect emerged from his home, scrutinized their car, went back inside, then reappeared to open fire on them.
While carrying out their duties in the 3200 block of Wayne Street, the officers, who were inside the vehicle at the time, took three bullets, but no injuries were reported. After the shooting, the undercover officers swiftly drove off to escape further harm, then circled back and called for backup, according to ABC13 Houston.
Assistance arrived promptly, eventually cornering the suspect back into his residence. Houston Police later detained the man and found a stolen firearm and narcotics presumed to be marijuana on the premises. Assistant Chief Jessica Anderson informed reporters that the operation did not result in any injuries to the officers, nor did they discharge their own weapons during the incident.
In the chaos of the moment, the suspect, by going back into his house and returning with a firearm, didn't appear to recognize the vehicle as belonging to law enforcement, Anderson said. The other occupants of the house cooperated with the investigation, leading to no further arrests on the scene. HPD shared an image on social media platform X showing officers, some in bulletproof vests and helmets, securing the area.
