A standoff in Victoria, Texas, has led to a decade behind bars for a local man who opened fire on federal agents. Mark Anthony Garcia Jr., 37, was handed a 120-month sentence after pleading guilty to aggravated assault of a federal officer with a deadly weapon, U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani announced. The heavy sentence follows an incident on Dec. 1, 2022, where Garcia barricaded himself in his home and shot at authorities.

Garcia's clash with law enforcement began when officers attempted to serve him with arrest warrants. Their knocks went unanswered at Garcia's residence. Persisting in their efforts, the officers were met with a barricaded door and had to force their way inside. Inside, Garcia fired two shots from a back room, narrowly missing the six officers present, and engaged them in a tense standoff that stretched on for hours.

The confrontation escalated with Garcia discharging his weapon at least five more times from his back bedroom hideout. In response, law enforcement deployed tear gas to subdue and apprehend the armed man. Garcia subsequently admitted to the possession of a firearm and issuing threats to use it against the officers.

Following his arrest, U.S. District Judge Drew B. Tipton imposed the 10-year sentence, which will be followed by three years of supervised release. The U.S. Attorney's Office stated that Garcia will remain in custody pending his transfer to an as-yet undetermined U.S. Bureau of Prison's facility. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Patti Hubert Booth after an investigation conducted by the FBI.
