Spurs fans were disappointed as the team's winning streak was halted by the Washington Wizards last night in a 118-113 defeat. Despite a challenging season, the Spurs couldn't maintain their momentum for a third consecutive win, falling to the Wizards who rallied in the final stretch.
Despite putting up a substantial 22 points and 11 rebounds, San Antonio's Victor Wembanyama's efforts weren't enough to overpower a determined Wizards squad. The striking pivot came in the closing minutes, as the Wizards executed a 9-0 run. Daniel Gafford's clutch dunk with just over five seconds left on the clock put Washington up by a decisive five points, according to CBS Sports.
Interim coach Brian Keefe praised Gafford's pivotal performance, telling CBS Sports, "Gaff I don’t think gets enough credit on our team, He’s been doing this all year. The big guys, he was down there battling. Obviously had that huge one down the stretch. That offensive rebound to kind of sealed the game off. His defensive intensity, his activity on the glass. He’s been our anchor." Those late heroics highlighted an intense fourth quarter for Washington, who turned the tables with a shooting performance that hit a scorching 68% from the field.
As for the Spurs' perspective, Coach Gregg Popovich did not mince words regarding the outcome. "A self-inflicted loss," Popovich lamented in a statement obtained by KENS 5. He criticized his team for not playing up to standards, saying, "I thought Washington played harder than we did, They played smarter. They executed better. We didn't have enough people playing well, or playing smart and we did that to ourselves."
The sparkling glimmer of hope for San Antonio, brought forth by Wembanyama's dynamic performance and a recent narrow victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, was abruptly dimmed, with the team now sitting at a dismal 10-37 record. They'll have a chance at redemption when they match up against the Orlando Magic tomorrow, as noted by KENS 5, in a bid to reclaim some of the earlier season's lost promise. As for Washington, the taste of consecutive wins is sweet, possibly heralding a tide change after replacing coach Wes Unseld Jr. with the interim direction of Keefe.
