The family, who have yet to be named, found themselves without their transportation when a 31-year-old woman allegedly decided to take it for a joyride. The unusual theft took place around 5:30 p.m. this past Saturday.
The Sturgis Department of Public Safety reported that “The victims had gone shopping at Walmart and came out to find their horse and buggy stolen,” It was a local truck driver, stationed in the Walmart lot, who claimed to have seen a female steal the buggy, according to the New York Post. This led to the swift apprehension of the buggy and horse, thankfully unscathed, and the suspect at a nearby hotel.
Earlier in the day, the same woman had already caught the attention of the police at the Walmart, details of which remain unclear. Information about her previous interactions with law enforcement surfaced after the stolen property was located at the 1200 block of E. Chicago Road. The suspect's encounter with the authorities earlier was confirmed by KRON4.
Authorities were later able to quickly track down the suspect at a nearby motel, arresting her without incident for larceny and larceny of livestock. The horse was unharmed and the family had their buggy returned, the Stugis Department of Public Safety compiled in their statement and was obtained by FOX 2 Detroit. The woman is pending arraignment for the charges pressed against her.
