A 13-year-old boy was arrested after leading police on a pre-dawn chase in a stolen car in Monroe County, Michigan. Authorities received a report of a stolen vehicle from a driveway at around 12:30 a.m. Sunday. A black 2009 Dodge Charger was taken from Kimberly Drive in Frenchtown Township.
Several hours later, the car was spotted by Lieutenant Brian Sroka at North Telegraph and Mall Road, approximately three miles from where it was reported stolen. Attempts to stop the vehicle were initially unsuccessful as the car continued to travel north, eventually driving off the roadway and into the front yard of a home. Monroe County Sheriff's deputies managed to then quickly apprehend the two young boys inside the stolen car. "The driver was a 13-year-old boy and the passenger, a 14-year-old boy, both from Monroe," the sheriff’s office stated.
The 13-year-old was taken into custody and is being held at the Monroe County Youth Center facing charges, while the 14-year-old passenger was released to his guardian. The young driver is facing charges for fleeing & eluding, and receiving and concealing stolen property, as per reports from 13ABC. The incident is currently under investigation, and the Monroe County Prosecutor's Office is expected to authorize a warrant for the 14-year-old.
Details surrounding the pursuit were confirmed by Sheriff Troy Goodnough. The chase concluded less than two and a half miles from where police initially began to pursue the vehicle. "The suspects reached the intersection of N. Monroe Street and Telegraph Road, under 2 1/2 miles away from the attempted traffic stop, before driving off the road," Goodnough explained, WTOL reported.
