A 72-year-old man from Walled Lake, Michigan, tragically lost his life in a snowmobile accident in the Upper Peninsula, authorities said. The incident took place late Monday evening on a popular snowmobile trail in Chippewa County, deep in the grips of a frozen frontier that offers respite in the forms of pure, unrelenting speed.
Michigan State Police with the Sault Ste. Marie Post raced to respond to the crash site just after the sun had dipped below the horizon. According to WWJ Newsradio, the crash occurred around 9:40 p.m. on February 19th, on Trail 47 near Highway M-123 in Trout Lake Township. Law enforcement officials have yet to disclose the events leading up to the crash.
The identity of the deceased was initially withheld as part of routine procedure, TV6 News relayed that the MSP Sault Ste. Marie Post confirmed the man's death, caused by injuries from the crash.
Authorities continue to piece together the moments before the snowmobile veered into its final stop. Inquiries persist, as noted by Public Radio 90.
