In a significant drug bust on Monday night, federal officers intercepted nearly $8.7 million in suspected cocaine hidden inside a commercial truck at the Ambassador Bridge. The driver, identified as Canadian resident Gagandeep Singh, who is originally from India, now faces federal charges of attempted drug possession with intent to distribute.
The seizure occurred when Customs and Border Protection officers, conducting routine checks around 11:45 p.m., instructed Singh to pull over for additional inspection. In defiance, Singh attempted to continue towards the toll booths but was subsequently detained by the officers, as stated by the Detroit Free Press. Upon inspection, authorities discovered discrepancies between the trailer's seal and the accompanying paperwork, which listed no health and beauty products despite the marked container.
The investigation escalated after a drug dog alerted to the presence of controlled substances, leading officers to uncover approximately 290 kilograms of a white powdery substance, confirmed to be cocaine through field testing. The drugs were packaged in 13 Home Depot cardboard boxes, all sealed with duct tape, according to WXYZ. The contraband, which typically signifies engagement in large-scale drug trafficking operations, was found inside the trailer just beyond the doors.
Furthermore, authorities found scissors and duct tape matching the securing material of the drug-laden parcels in a mesh pocket in the cab of the truck. While no defense attorney is currently listed for Singh in court records, the gravity of his alleged offense is underscored by the fact that cocaine was involved in almost a quarter of all drug overdose deaths in 2021, as reported by The Detroit News, citing Centers for Disease Control data. The incident stands as the latest in a series of drug trafficking attempts thwarted at the U.S.-Canada border, which have led to lengthy prison sentences for previous offenders.
This latest bust conjures memories of other sizable cocaine interceptions at the Ambassador Bridge, including a July 2022 incident where over 65 kilograms were seized, and a November 2021 event with more than 142 kilograms confiscated. These arrests have resulted in substantial prison terms, a path Singh might soon also walk down if convicted for his involvement in cocaine distribution.
