An Alpena County jury has delivered a guilty verdict against Brad Srebnik, a 36-year-old Alpena man, for the brutal murders of two Michigan women in 2021. Srebnik faces a mandatory life sentence without parole for the first-degree murder of 17-year-old Brynn Bills and 31-year-old Abby Hill, as announced by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and Alpena County Prosecutor Cynthia Muszynski.
According to a news release from the Michigan Department of Attorney General, Joshua Wirgau, 35, also from Alpena, pled guilty to disinterment and mutilation of a dead body, felony accessory after the fact, and involuntary manslaughter in connection to the case. Sentenced to 15-30 years following a plea agreement, Wirgau cooperated with the prosecution, providing testimony on the second day of the trial.
Reports from MLive detail that Srebnik murdered Bills shortly after being picked up with the help of Wirgau and Hill, buried her body in Wirgau's backyard. Srebnik, Wirgau, and Hill were later dropped off to camp in a remote area of Alpena, where Srebnik killed Hill by gunshot to prevent her from disclosing the murder of Bills. Hill's body was found on October 15, 2021.
"The murders of Brynn Bills and Abby Hill shocked the community, and it is our hope that these convictions may bring some peace and healing to the friends and family of these two young women whose lives were tragically cut short," Attorney General Nessel said in a statement obtained by MLive. Srebnik was also found guilty on charges of disinterment and mutilation of a dead body, felony firearm, second offense, and felon in possession of a firearm.
Muszynski, expressing gratitude towards the victims' families, stated, "With these verdicts, justice has finally been achieved for these young people and they will go a long way in helping these families and this community begin the healing process." The success of the case was credited to the partnership with the Attorney General's Office and the Michigan State Police. According to the Michigan Department of Attorney General, sentencing dates for Srebnik have not been set as of yet.
