In a tragic turn of events, a 44-year-old woman with a history of DUI convictions has pleaded guilty to the murder of a young pregnant woman in Anaheim. The horrific incident, which occurred when the perpetrator was under the influence of drugs and behind the wheel on a suspended license, has culminated in a courtroom admission that brings small solace to the surviving family members. Courtney Fritz Pandolfi, the driver in question, has been implicated in the death of 23-year-old Yesenia Aguilar, as well as the injury of her unborn child, who was later delivered through an emergency C-section, according to the Orange County, Office of District Attorney.
According to officials, the collision unfolded on August 11, 2020, when Pandolfi, driving a white Jeep SUV, veered off the road and onto a sidewalk on Katella Avenue, striking Aguilar who was out for a walk with her husband. The vehicle continued to rampage down the sidewalk, traveling a total of 347 ft without ever braking or taking evasive action to right its deadly course. Pandolfi was reportedly high on a combination of cocaine and methamphetamine at the time of the crash.
The Orange County District Attorney's office informed the public that Pandolfi is facing a maximum sentence of 15 years to life if convicted on all charges. Pandolfi pleaded guilty to one felony count of murder among other charges, including driving under the influence of drugs causing bodily injury, driving on a suspended license, and possession of controlled substance paraphernalia. "This was not an accident. This is a woman who made a habit of driving while high. She was warned over and over again about the dangers of her actions," District Attorney Todd Spitzer said, as per Orange County, Office of District Attorney.
A heartbreaking element of this case is the survival of Aguilar's infant daughter, who has now been deprived of the chance to grow up with her mother's embrace and voice due to what Spitzer called a "selfish decision to get behind the wheel while high on drugs." Pandolfi had received the Watson advisement, a warning specific to California DUI convicts about the potential for murder charges in the event of a fatal crash, multiple times following convictions in 2008, 2015, and 2016. Senior Deputy District Attorney Brian Orue of the Homicide Unit is prosecuting the case, indicating the severity with which the state views these repeat offenses, as reported by Orange County, Office of District Attorney.
