An Apple Valley man, identified as Clint Griffith, 51, is now in critical condition after reportedly shooting himself in the head during a carjacking attempt on Sunday. The same suspect was wanted for murder after Sommer Kelly, 40, tragically lost her life to multiple gunshot wounds earlier last week, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department.
While fleeing the scene of the murder, Griffith became the center of a manhunt that ended with him self-inflicting a gunshot during a carjacking in Barstow. As per the officials, after the carjacking went sideways, Griffith was taken into critical care, battling for life, with his current condition unknown to the public at large. The harrowing murder took place on January 30, around 12:17 a.m., where Griffith allegedly fired shots at his residence on Waalew Road, fatally injuring Sommer Kelly, and critically wounding an 18-year-old female believed to be her daughter.
Detectives from the Homicide Detail swiftly took over the case, and through diligent investigation efforts, were able to pinpoint Griffith as the perpetrator. An arrest warrant for Griffith had been out, remaining at large until the recent incident. Kelly's daughter was rushed to the hospital and thankfully remains in stable condition after the ordeal. Onlookers of the investigation are encouraged to assist by contacting the Homicide Detail at 909-890-4904 or to reach out anonymously via We-Tip at 1-800-78-CRIME, or their website, for those harboring potentially crucial information.
Detective A. Alcala, who has been heavily involved with the case, continually seeks the public's helping hand, as the information unearthed could aid the ongoing investigation and eventual legal proceedings. The Sheriff-Coroner's Department's meticulous release of information underscores their commitment to transparency in a situation fraught with complexities and weighs heavy on the hearts of the Apple Valley residents.
