Arlington police have released bodycam footage capturing the moment an officer shot and killed Sean Daniel McKay, 49, during a traffic stop on Interstate 20. The incident occurred on February 8, and the release of the video has sparked discussions regarding the officer's use of deadly force.
The FOX 4 News report clarifies that McKay was pulled over for erratic driving and an illegal license plate covering. Arlington Police Chief Al Jones indicated that the situation escalated quickly after McKay failed to comply with an officer's commands. "We don't have to wait for someone to point a gun at us before we take action," Jones said, signaling that by the time a weapon is pointed, it might be too late for officers to react properly.
During the fatal encounter, McKay was asked repeatedly by the police if he possessed weapons in his vehicle. He responded negatively multiple times, as shown in the video provided by the WFAA report. Jones acknowledged that although McKay did not point the gun, he never dropped it. After McKay reached for the gun and seemed noncompliant, the Arlington officer, an 8-year veteran of the department, fired three rounds, resulting in McKay's death.
The bodycam video shows the intense moments leading up to the shooting. The officer can be heard shouting, "I'll kill you, put the gun down!" Yet despite the officers' commands, McKay didn't comply. Jones stated in a press conference, "I wish we could have had a better outcome. That's why it was important to comply." These details were corroborated by a statement obtained from Arlington Police Chief Al Jones to WFAA. Following departmental guidelines, the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave as the investigations continue.
Adding a personal dimension to the story, Taylor Royster, a friend of McKay who was present at the scene, expressed her shock to FOX 4 News, stating, "I'm just speechless." She and her boyfriend believe the officer approached McKay too aggressively. McKay, as noted by Chief Jones, was a convicted felon and thereby prohibited from possessing a firearm. The Arlington Police Department has not released the name of the officer involved in the shooting, and both criminal and administrative investigations are in progress.
