February is kicking off with vibrant celebrations of Black History Month, and the Arlington Public Library is spearheading a host of events honoring Black culture and achievements. From interactive scavenger hunts to evenings filled with art and jazz, the local institution is determined to educate and enthuse the community about the contributions and stories of Black individuals.
In an age where understanding and unity are more than necessary, the library is inviting people to dive into a variety of programs designed for all ages. For tiny tots, there's Music 'n Motion Storytime every Thursday—featuring the tunes of Ella Jenkins—and the Little Explorers session at The Play Room on Feb. 16. As reported by the City of Arlington, Texas, families can bond and kids can learn through play-based activities that shine a light on pivotal figures and moments in Black history.
The youth aren't being left behind in the festivities. They can enter a world of discovery with events like the Lego Free Play sessions, highlighting the ingenuity of Black inventors, and the Genius Hour, which promises to exercise youthful brains with educational activities. Teens have an exclusive invitation to the Celebrating Black Superheroes event, where they can immerse themselves in comic book trivia and crafts, all while engaging in conversations about their favorite heroes.
Not to be outdone, adults have their share of the cultural pie with an elegant Artist Reception on Feb. 24. A stunning gallery showcasing local Black artists will be on display, accompanied by the sultry sounds of live jazz, proving that elegance and enlightenment can be perfect partners. The Library cautions that registration is required for this posh outing. And for those with little ones, the library is hosting an additional Family Storytime on Feb. 26, aimed at stirring the imagination of children with stories and songs that traverse the rich tapestry of Black history.
