Austin Achieve Public Schools, serving the Austin area with four tuition-free charters, has axed 24 staff roles due to financial challenges pitching from a decrease in student attendance among other concerns. The layoffs, which occurred last Friday, included teachers and were attributed to a lower-than-expected average daily attendance that significantly dictates state funding levels for charters and school districts. According to KXAN, this cost-saving measure followed the Texas legislators' failure to pass additional funding for public and charter schools.

School Founder John Armbrust revealed in a Tuesday statement that the management had hoped for an increase in state funding for K-12 public schools. Since 2019, these levels have remained unchanged. "District leadership had hoped for an increase in state funding for K-12 public schools, as funding levels have remained stagnant since 2019, but had to make the unfortunate decisions about staff reductions after realizing state funding increases would not occur," Armbrust told KXAN. Pre-pandemic, Austin Achieve boasted a 96.5% average daily attendance rate, which has since plunged by nearly 3%.

Despite the staff cuts, Austin Achieve assures that most grade levels will not confront changes in class size. The charter system is arranging to hold a town hall with the community in the upcoming weeks to discuss the current situation and future plans. KVUE reported that the school system is also striving to support the transition of staff affected by the layoffs.

In their official statement, Austin Achieve commented on the layoff's challenging nature but cited it as a necessary act to ensure the institution's ongoing stability and success. "Austin Achieve has a long track record of academic and operational success, and although these decisions are never easy and we realize their impact on staff and families, the changes were made to ensure the school system's stability and continued success moving forward," Austin Achieve said. The charter system maintains its focus steadfastly on furthering the academic pursuits and life opportunities of its scholars.
