In a move to potentially revolutionize higher education affordability, Austin Community College District (ACC) is taking strides to expand its free tuition program initiative for the class of 2024. The college is currently evaluating widening the eligibility for the program which was first shared in January, now proposing to cover not just local high school seniors, but also homeschool graduates, charter school students, and GED completers in the area.
ACC Chancellor Dr. Russell Lowery-Hart spoke about the critical importance of the program stating, "This just makes college affordable. It also opens us up to families that might not have considered us otherwise. That is a game changer. That is a life changer," in a work session held on February 12, as reported by the college's newsroom. The initiative also looks to ambitiously include dependents of ACC employees, an expansion prompted by staff feedback. Efforts to ensure these educational opportunities do not stop at tuition fees but also allow students to use other forms of financial aid, like scholarships and Pell grants, to cover their living expenses.
Dr. Lowery-Hart explained the holistic support the program aims to provide: "Covering tuition for our students, other funding like scholarships and Pell grants can help them meet their basic needs. We don't ever want a student to have to choose between paying for college or their rent," he highlighted the commitment to equity and success for all students. The innovative program will cover Credit and Continuing Education courses that lead to a credential of value, aligning with Texas House Bill 8.
Behind the scenes, multiple workgroups districtwide have been established to carefully plan and implement the program in seven key areas. According to enrollment projections and the number of local graduates, the pilot program will cost around $7 million. The ACC Board of Trustees is expected to take a formal vote on the initiative come March, with hopes it will pave the way for the wider goal of providing tuition-free education for all students within the district.
