Staring at a drab wall can be a bummer, but in Austin, Texas, that's hardly ever the case. The city's streets are a visual feast, splashed with mosaic installations that can make even the dull act of waiting at a traffic light feel like a mini-culture hit. The city boasts at least 10 must-see mosaic artworks, from park walls to entire building facades that are sure to grab your gaze, according to Mozaico.

And for those inclined to not only see but also create, the Mosaic Workshop in east Austin is on track to to fully open its doors mid-February. This spot is more than just a studio; it's an educational hub where the community can try their hand at everything from coasters to murals, and it's moving from its old digs on East Cesar Chavez to a new home on Airport Boulevard, co-founder J Muzacz said, as per KXAN.

The workshop isn't just cranking out pretty pictures. It's steeped in eco-friendliness, letting nothing go to waste and turning scraps into spectacle. "The affinity for mosaic art comes from a recycling capability by repurposing material, like broken glass bottles, smashed aluminum cans, bottle caps and even pennies," Muzacz emphasized in an interview with KXAN.

Austin's public mosaic art, in all its reflective glory, is more than just pretty patterns. It serves to knit together communities, details the history and brings a sense of identity to the areas it decorates. The Legends Project, featured on The Mosaic Art website, honors women of color and individuals who've left their mark on Austin, with 36 portraits and counting. These pieces, scattered down East Cesar Chavez Street, are more than installations; they're history lessons without the snooze-inducing lectures.
