As the challenge of homelessness grows alongside the booming population in Austin, fresh tech initiative Nomadik AI hopes to shed light on the issue by charting the locations of homeless encampments throughout the city.
The startup, deeply embedded in the high-tech landscape of Austin, is in the beta phase of trialing a mapping technology that promises to assist in identifying the spread of individuals without a roof over their heads, many of which are turning to tents, vehicles, and other uninhabitable spaces to claim some semblance of shelter; the public can view this map on the company's website, aiming to paint a clearer picture of the homelessness crisis, according to the Austin Business Journal.
Co-founder Trevor Sorrells expressed to the Austin Business Journal the intent behind the company's technology: "What we want to do is provide that data layer so that the nonprofits and the city can effectively manage their resources to tailor their solutions." Indeed, until now, quantifying the homeless population has been a challenging task, cloaked by the transient and often hidden nature of these living conditions.
As of October 2023, Echo, an organization that monitors homelessness, estimated there were 6,683 individuals experiencing homelessness in Austin or Travis County in just one day, this figure encompasses those in shelters and those roughing it in spaces not fit for human habitation, like cars and abandoned buildings while this new tech developed by Nomadik could play a pivotal role in providing more accurate assessments and in connecting individuals with vital resources. Nomadik AI co-founder Morgan Winters explained the difficulty of quantifying the situation to KXAN, stating, "It is hard to quantify and that is in a sense the nature of the problem," and adding optimistically about the company's application, "could help in the fight to end homelessness."
