
A Texas man was fatally shot and a Battle Creek police officer injured during a confrontation in Michigan on Thursday, authorities said. The conflict erupted after officers were called to the scene at Café Rica on East Michigan Avenue following reports of an unwelcome individual around 3:42 p.m, as reported by the Detroit News.
What began as a call to Café Rica, 62 E. Michigan Ave, escalated quickly when, a female officer grappled with the suspect. During the physical scuffle, the officer sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, per the officials' statement. Concurrently, another officer, intervened by discharging their weapon at the suspect, and thus, terminated the altercation, as detailed by the City of Battle Creek's official website.
The deceased, a 29-year-old man, who has yet to be officially identified, received immediate attention from first responders. Alas, he was declared dead at the scene, informed officials said. The wounded officer was quickly transported to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
In line with procedure, the officer who shot the suspect has been placed on administrative leave until the investigation run by, the Michigan State Police and the Battle Creek Crime Lab, comes to an end. As authorities delve deeper into the specifics of the case, they urged locals to avoid the area between Division Street and Capital Avenue while the investigation is still active.
