Austin's landscape of mass transit is welcoming a new player: CapMetro's McKalla Station located a stone's throw from Q2 Stadium, home to soccer team Austin FC. According to KXAN, the station is set to open its doors on February 24, just in time for fans to catch a free ride to Austin FC's season opener on Saturday.
The inaugural ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. that Saturday, with officials cutting the ribbon to signal the start of operations, however, in a video posted by The Metro Project it was indicated that the anticipated attendees will witness a seamless integration between public transportation and sports entertainment as McKalla Station rides on the Red Line from Leander into downtown Austin with higher-frequency service touted as an upgrade to the closing Kramer Station.
Andy Loughnane, Austin FC President, heralded the station's opening as a milestone, telling KXAN, "This transformational addition to our neighborhood and matchday experience is the result of remarkable collaboration and commitment from our partners at City of Austin, CapMetro, Project Connect, and Austin Transit Partnership." Loughnane further exclaimed the accessibility of Q2 Stadium by eco-friendly public transit cements a real game-changer for the club, its supporters, and the Austin community at large.
The transit agency's decision to embrace this location coincides with Austin FC's kickoff, which aligns well with the spirited zeal of the Verde and Black's fanbase, who, according to footage by The Metro Project, are sure to use the rail line to swarm the game day attendance while McKalla Station is directly adjacent and directly connected to Q2 Stadium lemphasizes the frictionless fan experience that's been envisioned and now realized.
