The City of Carrollton is stepping up its emergency response game, aiming to become the first in Texas and fourth nationwide to minimize the deadly toll of sudden cardiac arrest with a cutting-edge program. Officially called the Avive 4 Minute City™ program, the initiative is a partnership between the city and Avive Solutions, Inc., boosted by unanimous support from the Carrollton City Council.
The program’s ambitious goal is to ensure that a trained volunteer with a portable automated external defibrillator (AED) can reach any potential sudden cardiac arrest victim within four minutes of the emergency call being placed. This rapid response could prove vital in saving lives, considering, every second, counts when the heart stops. "During a cardiac event, every second is critical," Fire Chief Michael Thomson shared, as per the City of Carrollton, Texas.
The Avive Connect AED™ is directly integrated into the emergency dispatch system. When dispatchers identify a call as a potential sudden cardiac arrest, they can instantly activate nearby AEDs. The devices then guide volunteers directly to the scene with turn-by-turn navigation.
Equipped with Wi-Fi, cellular, GPS, and Bluetooth connectivity, these innovative AEDs go beyond mere defibrillation devices. Their REALConnect software enables two-way communication with the North Texas Emergency Communications Center, so, any AED within a mile of an incident can be deployed instantly. Michael Thomson heralds Avive’s Connect AED™ as a potential "game changer" in crucial situations where bystander intervention and timely defibrillation are key to patient survival.
The grim reality underscores the need for such advanced emergency responses. The American Heart Association cites over 356,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests annually nationwide, with a staggering 90 percent ending in fatalities. This program is Carrollton’s answer to that harsh statistic, seeking to substantially improve the chance of survival for its residents facing such dire circumstances.
As part of the launch, Avive is providing 200 AEDs to citizen volunteers who pass a stringent selection process including specialized training and a background check, beginning with a pilot group of local emergency personnel and community members. These volunteers will be the vanguard of the program, poised to deliver life-saving aid swiftly. Furthermore, to facilitate the project's commencement, the Metrocrest Hospital Authority has stepped in with crucial funding.
Carrollton’s initiative conjures a vision of a city interlaced with a network of first responders, embodying a community united in the collective pursuit of safeguarding life.
