Central Michigan University is paving the way for more of its state residents to hit the books without breaking the bank. The university's CMU Tuition Advantage program has expanded to include not just more students but hopes for their future, according to Central Michigan University. Under this program, starting in fall 2024, freshmen and transfer students with a family income and assets less than $65,000 will find themselves eligible for free tuition, certainly sweetening the deal of higher education.
The expanded initiative aims to dismantle financial hurdles, offering 30 credit hours of paid tuition annually—split between fall and spring semesters—as well as covering the student service fee. Sarah Kasabian-Larson, CMU's director of scholarships and financial aid, said, "Through the CMU Tuition Advantage, we are breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for students to pursue their first bachelor's degree," in a CBS News Detroit report.
Eligibility for this boon to education isn’t complicated—students need only complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which CMU officials will then review to automatically determine qualifications. "The first step in determining eligibility for our incoming Michigan students is just filing the FAFSA," Kasabian-Larson told CMU News. The aid office stands ready to assist those grappling with questions on this process, offering guidance on how to navigate the application for this newly broadened financial aid landscape.
Following the program terms, it's not only about meeting the income and assets threshold. Qualification for Pell Grants, full-time enrollment at the main campus, and Michigan residency for both students and their parents—these ticked boxes will secure a slot in the CMU Tuition Advantage program. Parents and students, living in Michigan, can connect with the financial aid office for queries. They can either dial in at 989-774-3674 or, for those looking to place a face to a name, schedule an in-person appointment to get their path to free tuition started.
