Dearborn residents and non-residents alike are gearing up to set sail — err, float — in cardboard boats this February 17 at 4 p.m. The City of Dearborn Department of Parks & Recreation is hosting their whimsical Cardboard Boat Race at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center, inviting amateur shipwrights to show off their aquatic craftiness. As reported by the City Of Dearborn, participants are already busy to roughly shape their sea vessels from cardboard and tape during the construction event held earlier today.
For those still considering jumping aboard, registration is open, but it comes with a small fee, adjusted on whether you're part of The Center, a city employee, a local, or are coming from out of town. Part of the charm is in the teamwork; each cardboard creation must ferry at least a duo across the pool's treacherous expanse, so grab a matey and get building. And remember, while the city provides the basics, teams need to bring any extra materials, as long as they stick to the rules — this is no place for plastic or rubber shortcuts.
As stated by the City Of Dearborn announcement, there’s more than just glory for the crossing the pool without sinking. Boats and their crews will compete for the fastest time, be recognized for their creative spirit, or, for those whose vessels plunge to the depths, get commemorated as the first to sink. Categories are broken down by age, from parent and child teams to those 18 and over, ensuring a fair chance for everyone. And what better way to climax the event than with the city departments squaring off against each other in a spirited show of interdepartmental rivalry?
It's not just about braving the waves; safety is also key. Competitors must don life jackets, provided onsite, though participants can also bring their own, as long as they meet Coast Guard approval. The rules clearly outline what floats and what doesn’t when it comes to boat construction. Participants may not submit an entry with any of the following materials: Wood, Screws, Nails, Plastic, Rubber, Glitter, Styrofoam filler, Toxic adhesives”, ensuring everyone gets to compete on an even playing field, or rather, a placid pool.
For those intrigued by this nautical challenge, more information about registering and what to expect on the big day is ready for perusal on the City of Dearborn’s website. This event promises to splish, splash, and potentially crash its way into the hearts of participants and spectators alike.
