A cohort of Dearborn students have set their sights on state funding to back a documentary targeting one of the significant health concerns among their peers: the growing vape culture. The anti-vaping film, dubbed "Clearing the Air, Together: The Battle Against Vaping," is the brainchild of Students Against Vaping (SAV), a volunteer group from Fordson, Dearborn, Edsel Ford High schools and Henry Ford Early College; it is set to spotlight the hazards of vaping, shattering myths while imparting potential solutions, FOX 2 reported.

The organization plans for the documentary to go multilingual, striving to resonate with a diverse audience wherever possible, News-Herald disclosed; this broad translation effort is part of their strategy to ramp up awareness on the perils of vaping and spur a behavioral shift.

Dearborn High's own Thomas Besek, the co-chair of SAV, underscored the influence of advocacy following a recent brush with policymakers in Lansing while emphasizing the student cohort's resolve to effectuate palpable change by confronting the alarming trend of teen vaping, Patch reports.

During a visit to the state Capitol on Oct. 30, 2023, aligned with National Red Ribbon Week, the students made their voices heard beyond school walls; they engaged in committee hearings, dialogued with legislators, and submitted a letter to State Reps. Alabas Farhat and Erin Byrnes spotlighting the necessity for educational programs, tighter regulations, and bolstered support services in the stand against teenage vaping, according to Bissan Elzein, another co-chair of the SAV legislative committee, in a statement obtained by FOX 2.

The anti-vaping motion has the backing of Dearborn Schools Superintendent Glenn Maleyko, who regards student engagement as crucial for fostering positive change within educational settings and has expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the SAV committee and partnership organizations, as documented by Patch.

Faye Nemer, a pivotal force as a Students Against Vaping Parent Co-Chair, has collaborated with the administration and local law enforcement to push for vaping reduction strategies among teens while serving as Fordson High School PTSA President and working alongside Violet Souweidane, the district’s Student Empowerment Facilitator, News-Herald conveyed.
