At a Walmart on Northwest Freeway, a deputy from Constable Mark Herman's Office nabbed a suspect mid-theft while already investigating a separate incident. On the lookout for shoplifters on February 17th, it was a case of being in the right place at the right time as loss prevention staff pointed out a fresh offense in progress.
According to a deputy, the culprit, James Martin Lane, attempted a classic retail theft maneuver — bypassing all points of sale with unpaid merchandise. However, the deputy was quick to intercept, discovering the stolen items upon Lane's arrest. Constable Mark Herman reported the capture and subsequent charges brought against Lane.
Herman announced Lane's arrest stating, "James Martin Lane was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail, charged with Theft. His bond was set a $100.00 out of County Court 2."
