In a move to advocate for safer online spaces, the DeSoto Police Department has announced its collaboration with ConnectSafely to mark #saferinternetday. An event traditionally observed on Feb. 6 aimed to foster a more secure and positive internet environment, garnering the backing of law enforcement to emphasize the importance of digital safety. As part of this initiative, a slew of educational materials and a free virtual program for parents were made available on SIDUSA.org, an effort to equip both adults and youth with the necessary tools to navigate the web responsibly.
Understanding the complexities of the internet landscape, the police department extends its outreach, encouraging community members to engage in open dialogues about online security. Parents, educators, and guardians are encouraged to leverage the allocated resources that lay bare the potential perils of the internet, and methods to mitigate them but awareness doesn't just stop with the resources, it's a continuous conversation that we must have with each other and with our kids, learning is daily.
According to the DeSoto Police Department, inquiries about internet safety were met with an open channel of communication, the department inviting direct messages to address any unresolved questions from the public.
The observance of #saferinternetday this year falls under the wider campaign of #sid2024, which includes the hashtag #sid2024icac - signaling the continued commitment to internet safety into the future as we move through the digital era, information becomes more accessible, and with that comes the increased responsibility to protect ourselves and the younger generations from online threats, just as we safeguard our communities in person as we understand the world around us is as much virtual as it is physical.
