Tragedy struck Detroit's east side early Friday morning as police discovered a 17-year-old boy fatally shot inside a car. The Detroit Police Department was alerted to the scene at approximately 1:30 a.m. by the ShotSpotter gunshot detection technology. The officers found the teenager's body in a vehicle, at the intersection of Mack Avenue and Balfour Road, The Detroit News reported.
The city's ShotSpotter system, which is designed to detect, locate, and alert police of gunshots, indicated multiple shootings in the area during the night. The system also signaled another potentially fatal incident near 7 Mile and Warwick on the city's west side, according to FOX 2 Detroit. This secondary alert emerged shortly after the discovery of the 17-year-old, where a 32-year-old man was also shot, and later self-admitted to a local hospital in critical condition.
Authorities have not yet released further information regarding the circumstances surrounding the teenager's death. The boy, who has not been publicly identified, was found with the fatal gunshot wound inside the parked car. "The teen was found fatally shot inside the car," was the concise detail given by CBS News Detroit in their coverage of the distressing event.
Detroit police are continuing their investigation into the spree of violence that has seemingly gripped parts of the city. No suspects have been taken into custody regarding any of the shootings, and police are actively seeking more information. Residents of the affected areas have been left shaken as the incidents signal an ongoing and urgent concern for safety in their communities.
