An explosion decimated a residence on Detroit's east side Tuesday afternoon, leaving three children with minor injuries and showering the neighborhood with debris. The Detroit Fire Department was called to the scene on Barlow Street near Seven Mile Road around 3 p.m., following numerous reports of the blast.
Among the chaos, a nearby home also suffered damage, with three children inside sustaining "cuts and bruises," according to Detroit Fire Chief James Harris, The Detroit News reported. The injured were taken to Ascension St. John Hospital, where their injuries were deemed non-life threatening. Harris added, "We did a quick response, which was great," and confirmed that crews were still tackling the aftermath into the evening.
Live images captured from SkyFOX painted a clear picture of the devastation: a leveled home, the roof hanging morosely from backyard trees above a damaged garage. "It’s not even a house anymore," neighborhood resident Jasmine Higgins told FOX 2 Detroit. "It’s not there. The roof is the trees." The children's father attempted to shepherd them to safety amid the chaos, Higgins revealed. No casualties within the demolished home have been reported, and it is suspected that the property was vacant at the time of the explosion.
Meanwhile, DTE Energy has pledged its cooperation, dispatching a crew to assist in securing the area while local authorities conduct their investigation. In a statement, the company asserted, "At DTE Energy, the safety of our customers and communities is our top priority." The ultimate cause of the explosion, however, remains undetermined, while the extent of the damage is still under scrutiny by fire officials, per FOX 2 Detroit.
