Last year, the music world and the Dripping Springs community were struck by tragedy with the death of Dorian Zev Kweller, a 16-year-old musician and son of singer-songwriter Ben Kweller. His school peers are set to honor him with a percussion piece meant to remember and celebrate his life. The piece, titled 'Zev', was written by composer Ivan Trevino and will premiere on Feb. 23 at Dripping Springs High School, almost a year after his passing, according to KXAN.

Ben Kweller detailed the heartbreaking news of his son's death, describing him as a "true legend" and a "kindest, gentle soul." Dorian, who went by the stage name Zev and was preparing to perform at his first SXSW show, tragically died in what was described as a "tragic event" by his father's record label The Noise Company. Despite having to confront such a deep loss, the Kwellers have decided to solemnly honor the artistic spirit Dorian left behind, through both music and community support, in a statement obtained by People.

The tribute is a collaborative effort, combining Dorian's musical talent and the compositional skills of the respected Ivan Trevino. "I immediately thought of having Ivan Trevino work on the commission, because of his background," Matt Ehlers, director of percussion for the Dripping Springs Independent School District, told KXAN

The upcoming concert is more than just a musical performance; it is a collective embrace, a communal effort to heal, remember, and continue to unfold the legacy of a young artist taken too soon. Through the sounds of guitar, synth, and even student voices, 'Zev' aspires to capture Dorian's multifaceted talent and the impact he had on his friends and family. "And so it really takes the listener on a journey," Ben Kweller told KXAN, confident that his son would have cherished the piece designed in his honor.
