After over 40 years of operation, the Maple Theater has drawn its final curtain in Bloomfield Township, bringing an end to an iconic spot cherished by film enthusiasts. The theater's management announced on Monday, signaling a farewell to a beloved venue that has weathered the tides of the film industry's evolution and recent turmoil.
Battling through the challenges that the pandemic foisted upon small businesses, the Maple Theater management could not muster the financial commitment to continue, despite witnessing "tangible glimmers of hope" for a return to pre-pandemic attendance numbers, according to a post on the theater's website cited by The Detroit News. While not renewing their lease, Jon and Lauren Goldstein expressed their heartfelt gratitude in a flier, thanking those who "bought a ticket, ate a meal, or worked a shift," sentiments echoed on the theater's website.
Underlying the closure is a stark reminder of the seismic shifts within the movie theater industry. As noted by FOX 2 Detroit, the Goldsteins faced "months of difficult deliberations" before deciding to cease operations. This shuttering follows a series of closings among independent theaters, including Royal Oak's Main Art Theatre and Cinema Detroit, pinpointing a trend of vanishing art house cinemas.
These closures represent more than a single business ending, says John Monaghan, a programmer at Redford Theatre who paid homage to the Maple on the Redford's marquee. "It means there's no local art house, no dedicated space to the enjoyment of non-commercial films on a nightly basis, and it's the first time I can remember it being that way," Monaghan remembered watching films such as the Who's "Quadrophenia" at the Maple, as mentioned in his tribute posted after the Maple announced its closure according to The Detroit News.
The Maple Theater is partnering with Emagine Theatres to ensure that patrons of its membership club and holders of outstanding gift cards are honored. These members and customers can redeem their benefits at the Birmingham 8, with details provided on Maple's website. The announcement of what customers can expect to do next was also shared in a social media post highlighted by WXYZ.
