The hustle through the halls of the Will Rogers Memorial Center is about to get a lift—literally. Fort Worth's City Council has stamped their approval on a deal to revamp the Center's escalators, contracting with Kone Inc. for a steel-and-circuitry upgrade worth up to $2,113,204.
This much-needed upgrade is set to replace four antiquated escalators that have been trudging along since 1984. And while the price tag might cause some to raise an eyebrow, the contract does include a $130,000 buffer for any mechanical or electrical gremlins that might pop up during the overhaul. Donning modern gear, these escalators aim to quickly become an effortless conduit for both cowboys and conference-goers alike.
According to the City of Fort Worth, the original movers are well past their prime. They've been chugging along for almost 40 years, racking up a hefty tab in maintenance costs and spotty service – a financial sinkhole for the city and a source of frustration for visitors.
The project's ambition is not just to seamlessly remove the old escalators, but also to introduce the next generation of vertical movers. These new models, sporting the latest tech, will not just to increase traffic flow but are promised to also uplift the overall user experience with improved performance, reliability, and efficiency. The glass and steel welcome for visitors will surely stand in bright contrast to the worn steps of yesteryear.
For regulars at the Will Rogers Memorial Center, which is rooted in the rich fabric of Fort Worth's cultural and event scene, this change is more than a mere convenience. It’s a nod to the future, ensuring that the Center remains a staple for business, recreation, and tradition. Visitors stepping onto the new escalators upon entry should expect a smooth ride and maybe, a symbolic step towards progress in the community.
