A grim Tuesday in Fort Worth turned hopeful as four local firemen began their journey back from the brink following a rollover crash of their fire truck. Officials reported the accident occurred early morning on the way to a house fire that also caused breathing issues for a resident.
The rollover, which happened around 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of Wilbarger Street, and Village Creek Road, injured Capt. Daniel Terrell, 46, critically, and put 42-year-old Firefighter Clint Robinson under the knife for surgery. Both men are 18-year veterans of the Fort Worth Fire Department. Alongside them, 42-year-old Engineer Matthew Schneider, who boasts 22 years of service, and Devin Kuhn, a 33-year-old nearly five-year veteran were treated for minor injuries and released. The accident prompted the fire crew from Engine 3 to miss their initial call to a blaze that later rendered several homeless, including Nena Pounds who went back into her home to save her daughter's puppy, causing her an asthma attack, according to the Firefighter Close Calls.
In a statement obtained by NBC DFW, the Fort Worth Fire Department expressed its gratitude. "We are grateful to be part of a community that cares deeply about their firefighters. Your compassion and support have not gone unnoticed. We feel the prayers and we appreciate each and every one of them," the department added. While Robinson was released from the hospital, Terrell’s condition remained severe but stable as he transitioned out of the intensive care unit.
Zac Shaffer, Vice President of the Fort Worth Professional Firefighters Association, said "It's a tremendous relief, right? Tuesday morning was a rough morning; we weren't sure how things were going to go." Shaffer, who rushes to the hospital whenever one of them falls, described a moment of panic upon learning of the crash. "I had a moment of panic at home, from the notification time to the time I got here," he shared. The firefighters have exhibited solidarity, with rotations to support Terrell's family around the clock, assisting with the necessities; living evidence of the brotherhood within their ranks, as per NBC DFW.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing with no details released as yet by the Fort Worth Police. The community rallied around the firemen, with the Red Cross stepping in to aid the displaced from the house fire. Meanwhile, the fortitude of those who rush towards danger, when most flee, is tested in the harshest of ways, underlining once again the sacrifices made by emergency services personnel.
