Galveston's rhythm is getting officially recognized as Governor Greg Abbott announced the coastal city's new title as a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community. The Texas Music Office (TMO) has given the nod to Galveston after it completed the necessary steps in the certification process, making it the 58th community to join this band of music-laden locales in Texas. "Congratulations to the City of Galveston on earning the Music Friendly Texas Certified Community designation," Abbott said, pointing out that the city worked hard to attract and nurture its local music industry, leading to more jobs and economic prosperity.
The initiative, pioneered by the TMO since 2016, is about far more than just tunes. In 2022 alone, the Texas music industry was responsible for more than 192,000 jobs and generated over $26 billion statewide. Galveston is now poised to continue to augment this success. "This Music Friendly Texas Community certification isn't just about music, it's about economic development and job creation," stated Galveston Mayor Craig Brown in a statement obtained by the Governor's office. Both city officials and music advocates voiced their enthusiasm about the designation, highlighting the power of music to bring together communities and foster economic growth.

The certification isn't merely a label—it’s an active commitment to improving and developing the local music scene, according to Galveston Park Board Trustee Bob Bullwinkel. As chairman of the Galveston Music Development Advisory Committee, Bullwinkel is determined to solidly establish Galveston as a top destination for musical tourism. Celebratory events are in the pipeline, with a Music Friendly Texas Community Certification Ceremony set to take place at The Grand 1894 Opera House on February 26, featuring local leaders and community speakers.
Members of the community are invited to attend the event, which promises to not just officially recognize the achievement but also to showcase Galveston’s local talent and music scene. Encouraging the community to rally behind this achievement, City Council District 4 Member Michael Bouvier said, "Music is a universal language that brings people together, and by embracing it, we're strengthening the bonds that make Galveston such a special place to live, work, and play," according to an interview with the Governor's office. With Galveston now firmly on the map as a certified hotspot for music lovers and industry professionals alike, the city’s cultural heartbeat stands ready to be amplified to audiences across Texas and beyond.
