In a twist of law enforcement in Grapevine, Texas, police have charged Kami Ludwig, age 35, with murder in connection with the fentanyl overdose death of her boyfriend, the former Tarrant County Judge William Shane Nolen. As FOX 4 News reports, Ludwig allegedly purchased the deadly fentanyl-laced pills along with other drugs from dealers spanning from Fort Worth to Louisiana. Nolen, found dead in his home back in November, now becomes the face of the dire crisis at the heart of this tragedy.
Authorities charged Ludwig after a search of her phone revealed she had obtained drugs, contacting call signs "Blue" and "T" before Nolen's fatal overdose. Responding to a death investigation on November 20, 2023, officers located Nolen's body in the bedroom, an overdose having claimed his life while his 9-year-old son was also in the home. At the scene, WBAP notes, Ludwig claimed to have awoken to Nolen lying unresponsive beside her, prompting her to rush to a neighbor's house for help.
This case marks one of the first applications of a new Texas state law that went into effect in September 2023, expanding the charge of murder to include the act of manufacturing or distributing fentanyl leading to death. Historically targeting dealers of such deadly substances, the law is now being used to scrutinize Ludwig's alleged role in the procurement of the drugs.
"They found evidence that she sought out the pills, she bought them and brought them back to the victim. He took them, and he died," Grapevine Police Department's Amanda McNew stated, confirming the connection between the drugs Ludwig allegedly procured and Nolen's overdose death. On the legal front, lawyer Zachary Ferguson, not affiliated with the case, suggests to FOX 4 News, that proving the murder charge could pose a difficult challenge for the state, citing doubts about the legislative intent behind the newly invoked statute.
Ludwig, who has bonded out since her initial arrest on charges of possession of a controlled substance, is being vehemently defended by her legal representation. "Fentanyl murder is a serious accusation, and judgment should be withheld until all the facts and circumstances are known. We proudly defend Kami as she, too, struggles with the loss of a beloved friend," Ludwig's attorney told FOX 4 News. Meanwhile, the Grapevine police continue their investigation, indicating that further arrests may be imminent.
