A fleeing felon on two wheels was nabbed by Harris County deputies after allegedly trying to ditch a traffic stop, authorities said. Anthony Gates, who was already out on bond for a weapons charge, led lawmen on a brief chase – on his bicycle – before being collared on February 27, according to officials.
The incident began when deputies attempted to pull over Gates as he pedaled down the 21000 block of Rhodes Road, but rather than stopping, Gates pumped his way to a nearby gas station, where he took off on foot before being detained. Gates, who deputies said had been out on a $10,000 bond for Felon in Possession of a Weapon, found himself slapped with new charges after cops discovered he was carrying 1.5 grams of Cocaine and counterfeit cash.
"Anthony Gates was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail for Evading on Bicycle, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of Counterfeit Currency. At this time his bond and court information have not been set." Constable Mark Herman announced.
Details of Gates' arrest were shared by Constable Mark Herman's Office on Facebook, wherein they detailed the sequence of events that led from a routine traffic stop to the discovery of drugs and bogus bills the suspect allegedly carried when things took a turn south for him after initially trying to skirt law enforcement's reach on his low-speed getaway vehicle.
