On the morning of January 31, a significant drug bust in Hesperia led to the arrest of a 34-year-old man, identified as David Cody Leff, a transient of the area. Hesperia Police, in conjunction with the San Bernardino County Probation K9 unit, unearthed a sizeable haul of illegal narcotics and an array of unregistered firearms at an established transient encampment. The raid executed near Amargosa Road and Palmetto Way, was part of a broader drug-related investigation, according to details released by the authorities.
Deputies Morales, Sanchez, and Gray were conducting the operation when they encountered several individuals, including Leff. During their safety sweep, they discovered narcotics and weapons in plain sight, a critical development in the ongoing battle against illicit substances. According to the official report, the K9 unit's diligent canines, Izzie and Bane, sniffed out an assortment of drugs – from prescription pills to suspected methamphetamine, and firearms, ranging from ghost guns to shotguns.
The narcotics haul included 64 prescription pills, 11 grams of suspected psilocybin mushrooms, and several grams each of suspected methamphetamine and fentanyl, substances infamously linked to the tragic overdose crises plaguing communities across the nation. Leff, already marked by a past felony, compounded his legal woes as he faces charges including possession of a controlled substance while armed and intent to sell.
Arrested at the scene, Leff was booked into the High Desert Detention Center, facing a serious list of charges. The firepower found alongside the drugs, including two ghost firearms, a revolver, a long rifle pistol, a rifle, a shotgun, and a flair gun, renders the incident particularly alarming, signaling not just a drug problem, but a potential for graver violence. The community has been urged to contribute any information to assist the Hesperia Police Department or to contact the We-Tip hotline for anonymous tips, in an effort to help authorities tighten the noose on drug trafficking activities in the area.
